Star ship sizes

Being nice and simple, Full Thrust tends to be a straightforward system to convert various science fiction settings to. There are plenty of conversions to be found on the Web, including my own Star Wars - conversions.

However, Full Thrust's simplicity also causes problems. Nowhere in the rules are real world scales mentioned, leaving people to guess how much mass the Nostalgia for Infinity or Lexx would have within the game. Given the

wide range - of ship sizes available, this can make things a wee bit complicated.

Mostly in order to try and rationalise my own conversions, I've laid down my own thoughts on how things might work.

First Principles

First principles are always good. We can start by taking something we know, and working from there. I'm assuming by the way, that a mass is a measure of volume, so two ships of the same mass will be about the same size.

The Fleet Book gives ship sizes in tonnes, with 1 mass = 100 tonnes. Though this suggests mass rather than volume, Traveller uses tonnes to equal displacement tonnes, and so I shall assume the same.

A bay for a single fighter takes up 1.5 mass. The generic rules for bays says that a bay will take up 1.5 x the mass of the ship it contains, so a fighter can be assumed to be around mass 1.

Assume 20m x 5m x 5m = 500m^3.

Example ships

Imperial Star Destroyer, 65,000,000m^3.

Millenium Falcon, 5,000m^3.

Traveller Beowulf Class Free Trader. 2,800m^3.
